DOGS

Many thanks to the committee and members for the opportunity to judge at their Club Ch show. It is always an honour to be asked.  I am grateful to all the exhibitors who entered and for allowing me to go over your lovely dogs and taking my choices with good grace.

Huge thanks must go to John and Mandy, my two very capable stewards, who kept the ring running so smoothly. I must also mention the committee for looking after me so well on the day and for supplying the delicious cake.

As always I was pleased to find that temperaments and presentation of the exhibits was first class except for dirty teeth in a few exhibits.  I like to see movement and character and with such a large ring I took advantage of moving the exhibits quite a few times.

JUNIOR DOG (2)

Two stunning boys who both performed so well.

1st: Potterdale Prime Edition - (Mr M J & Mrs S A Osborne)

15 months old dark slate boy who really took my eye. On the stand he presented a nicely balanced outline with well developing head and dark eye. Matching angles fore and aft with good length and depth of rib. On the move this youngster really came into his own. Taking advantage of the large ring he moved out with a far reaching, easy gait which ultimately won him the RDCC.

2nd: Malandex Xciting Image - (Miss Baker & Miss M J Van De Hoef)

This 10 month old slate puppy made my choices very difficult. Different type to 1 but so very well made throughout and with movement that complemented his construction. So well presented and handled as you would expect from this kennel.  Pleased to award him BPD and then see him awarded BPIS. Well deserved.

OPEN DOG (3 / I Abs)

This class provided the most difficult of challenges, three worthy Champions at their best.  It came down to the smallest of choices which on another day could change.

1st: CH Ungaro De Chester (Imp Fra) - (Mrs D Glasspool & Miss A Gray)

Presented at his best, this boy has matured nicely and carries a super dark coat of correct texture and length, presenting a fine picture on the stand, from his strong head with dark eye to well placed shoulders, good length and depth of rib. Moving out well and taking advantage of the large ring. This boy has won well in the show ring and I was pleased to be able to judge him. Very well deserved DCC. So pleased to see later that he went BIS.

3rd: CH Fraglestone Family Affair - (Miss P K Brooks & Mr S C Grundy)

And the final one of a super trio of champions. Lovely head and expression,  good harsh coat of correct texture and length, excellently presented and handled. Stood well over himself and showed a good outline.  Moving out completely in tune with his handler.

BITCHES

Many thanks for the invitation to judge the Southern Counties Bearded Collie Club Championship Show. It’s the first Beardie Club we joined nearly 40 years ago (yes really!), and this made the appointment very special. Thanks also go to the committee for the great hospitality, to my stewards John and Mandy and to the exhibitors who brought along their special charges for me to judge.

I did enjoy my day and I hope others did too.

On the whole, I only found a couple of questionable mouths and hardly any dirty teeth. Movement was a little erratic with a few exhibits slipping on the mats, especially on the corners. This could of course, be something to do with the handlers. Muscle tone was good enough after a long, very wet Winter.

I found quite a lot of shorter tails but more of a concern is the lack of correct rib shape and length. I could count on one hand the number of ‘pear-shaped’ ribs, and long rib cages with short loins.

Eye colour was good but only a few had the depth of eye colour that is so enchanting. On the plus side, Coats were excellent in texture and grooming was very good, only found a few knots along the way. There were a few difficult decisions to make in some classes and a few very worthy exhibits were not in the top place, I’m sure that could change on another day. Temperaments were excellent as I would expect and those expressions!!

Although our numbers have dropped dramatically we still have a depth of quality in our breed, that others envy.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (3 / 1 Abs)

1st: Briarsfield Frizzy Lizzy - (Ms N. J. Emmingham)

8 month old Black and White. The two puppies in this class are litter sisters. Very similar in type, colouring and substance. Both had everything in the right place, good teeth, toning eyes and excellent pigmentation. Movement was a little erratic but its early days and they have plenty of time. Both made their handlers work hard for their placings!

2nd: Briarsfield Dark Butterfly For Fraglestone - (Miss P. K. Brooks & Mr S. C. Grundy)

8 month old Black and White. Litter sister to number 1. Just felt this puppy had decided to grow her legs a little more today which knocked her out of balance for now. I’m sure they will change places many times in the future.

One to watch for the future.

YEARLING BITCH (3 / 1 Abs)

1st: Brookles Barkarole - (Mrs L. A. Brookes)

20 month old Black & White. As her age would suggest going through a coat colour and texture change at the moment although this does not detract from her excellent breed points. Good size with balanced angulations. Good on the stand and moved out well around the ring.

2nd: Beabeardies Blue Monday - (Mrs L. Bevis)

22 month old blue & White. She has a good head, toning eye and pigment. Good body and well let down hocks. Didn’t like the floor as she was slipping on the mats, when she settled moved well. Just needs more time.

Nearly 5 year old slate. I have judged this girl before and all my previous remarks still stand. Has a well arched neck, good front and back angulations which show her balance. Excellent rib and loin. Showing a clean outline. Well presented and handled, although she did think at one point it was playtime, got her act together to move effortlessly around the ring.

4 and a year old half dark slate. A well presented young lady with a beautiful expression and outline. Good shoulders, top line, rib length and a turn of stifle all topped off with an abundance of correctly textured coat. This was a close decision between 1 and 2.

6 year old light slate. Another lovely girl to complete a great trio of bitches.  Feminine bitch with good dark eyes in a well shaped head. Correct bite and good pigmentation. Level top-line with good shape and length of rib. Moved out well.

BEST IN SHOW

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at this friendly and well run show and thank you to the two judges for sending such lovely Beardies through for me to judge.

BIS was the dog Ch Ungaro de Chester - all male with scopy movement, could not be denied BIS. RBIS was Another Posh Frock at Sammara JW, a feminine bitch of lovely type. BPIS was the dog puppy Malandex Xciting Image who had the edge in movement over his litter sister Malandex  Xquisit Image for Emazenridge  who is a little ‘bum high’ at the moment.

BVIS was the dog Ch Potterdale Piper, masculine dog of lovely type who moved out well, just pipping the bitch Zoesta Sheer Bliss at Moonhill another feminine girl of super type.

Best Vintage was Malandex Xtremely Brown a masculine boy whose movement round the ring belied his age, over the bitch, Davankirk Primrose Main who had lost a bit of her enthusiasm by this point!
